It’s November, and Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Family, food, and the inevitable football game with Uncle Frank in the comfy chair, snoozing away the effects of a turkey dinner. The kids have been sent out to run off their excess energy.
The Turkey Trot, according to Wikipedia, is a footrace or fun run held on or just before Thanksgiving Day. Because of the typical overindulgence on Thanksgiving, many people anticipate this and run in a Turkey Trot to burn off calories before the Big Meal. In many parts of our country, Turkey Trots are as American as listening to Alice’s Restaurant at noon, or preparing and gathering for the traditional meal on Thanksgiving Day. Organizations often hold them to benefit local charities.
The oldest Turkey Trot race in North America is held in Buffalo, New York, where in 2008, there were 10, 250 runners, fundraising for the local YMCA. Locally to Worcester, MA, is the Sixth Annual Wachusett Fitness 5K Turkey Trot in Holden, MA, starting at 8 am (registration is at 7 am), benefiting the Wachusett Food Pantry.
